About the work

Andriana Treasure ... Her work is instantly recognizable through its colour, texture and above all, its sensitivity.

... there is a fantastic tension in Andriana's paintings. Frequently this is between the delicate and the powerful. Often it explores degrees of control and independence. There is an emotional richness in the work which is unusual in contemporary art.

Artist's Statement:

The role of art is to transform and in order to do that the artist must connect with the viewer. There must be a shared moment between the artist and the viewer, some intersection of their life stories. When that happens the viewer is touched and usually they buy the work, whether or not they can easily afford it.

But there is not one truthful interpretation. Some people bring sadness and heaviness to my paintings, some people see spiritual strength. It depends on what's going on in their head, not in mine. Mostly what goes on in my head is just a memory of an image. The memory will influence me on an almost sub-conscious level while I paint and listen to the music. When I paint on my own it is like a trance. There is communication between me and the character on the canvas. The character says "bring me out", "let me develop" and I take the work in the direction that feels right.

You have one idea but when you start painting, something else happens. Creativity takes you in a different direction. The battle is to be open to what the painting is trying to tell you. That will take you somewhere you didn't expect to be. That is the beauty of it for an artist.
Some people paint in an ordered, logical, planned fashion, not me. For me it's play. At the outset I put unrelated marks on a canvas and I have no idea of what the finished image will be and I keep experimenting and playing until I think the painting is finished. This is something I decide intuitively.

In order to get to that point where a strong image starts to emerge, I must not try to take the painting in a particular direction. Sometimes I deliberately sabotage something that emerges too early. Usually I rotate the painting and paint upside-down or sideways to prevent getting trapped by my own expectations.

Reasoning is not conducive to creativity. The more logical you are the more handcuffed you are by what you are supposed to do next. Creativity comes from play. You only need to compare the creative output of adults and children to realise that. I believe that art is more about feelings than concepts. Expressing feelings. Feelings are better expressed in images than words. If I wanted to be logical I'd do it in words. I'm not interested in words.

If I could make one criticism of contemporary art I'd say that art is not about words and being clever it's more about experience and feelings. Art is not words it's another language, a different way of communicating. A beautiful, rich, powerful way of communicating.
